Many people will be horrified by this provocative title. Don't worry, this article is not intended to lower Scrum, but on the contrary, to position it where it should be.

SCRUM IS NOT AN AGILE METHOD

You might have observed that people who suffer emotional and/or physical pain in one area of their lives, usually let it seep into their whole personality and disturb themselves as well as the people close to them. The loss of a job, death of a loved one, disease, financial setback, or any emotional crisis may lead people into clinical depression. That happens because they are unable to contain the pain in one area of their lives spilling over to their whole existence.

You can stop this leakage of your personal power by using the psychological tool of compartmentalization:

- If you have had a bad day at work that doesn’t mean you have to come home and shout at your kids or spouse.

- If the traffic has been crazy, you don’t have to make people working with you crazy also.

- If you are suffering from a disease, you don’t have to make everyone else sick also.

- If your finances are out of control, that doesn’t mean you have to be drunk and abusive all the time.

You get my point, right? Such irresponsible behaviors usually complicate the problem further, instead of solving it.

HOW YOU CAN USE THE POWER OF COMPARTMENTALIZATION

1. Create a gap between the stimulus and response. It simply means don’t react impulsively.

2. Acknowledge that you got a problem. I’m not telling you to ignore it. Instead, put it in a mental box, for the time being, stack it away and go on with your life as you would normally do. If there is no emergency, you can deal with it later.

3. Change your state. I mean physical state, body stance, breathing rate, posture, etc. Stand tall. Breathe deep. Drink a glass of water. Do something and don’t let the overwhelming feeling of reacting impulsively get the better of you.

4. When you leave your place of work, make a point of leaving behind all your work worries right there. Don’t bring them back home with you.

5. If the problem is with your kids, keep it with your kids and don’t let it affect your relationship with your spouse.

You got to learn to contain the problem in its natural boundaries and stop it from affecting everything else you do:

Get out of your problem indulged mindset. Box up the pain, the hurt, the problem bothering you, stack it away, and deal with it when your head is clear and you can find a creative and workable solution for it.

This kind of compartmentalization works very well in the short term, in the heat of the moment, and saves you a lot of embarrassment and fallouts of misjudged and impulsive decisions.

It takes self-discipline. It takes a bit of practice. It takes determination. But you can do it. You can learn to be in this mindset once you consciously choose to be in it.

Awareness is half the practice already and the other half is being mentally prepared. I don’t expect you to master this psychological tool of compartmentalization in a day but do give it a shot. Consciously resist yourself from reacting impulsively and lashing out at anyone or hurting yourself without any good reason to do so.

Please notice that I said it works in the SHORT TERM. There always is a psychological side-effect of any held back, unexpressed and repressed emotion. Be aware of that and deal with your pains and problems properly and thoroughly once you have calmed down and can think clearly.

Why you should learn to compartmentalize

If you are a blogger yourself, recall your early days of blogging — the way you fussed over your posts, checked your stats, waited for that first comment to arrive, longed for that first link-back, checked Google to see if it has indexed your post or not, etc.  But have you ever really thought, that what is blogging all about and why do you blog?

It’s an open-ended question and there is no one “right” answer for it. I asked this same question to myself, before starting this blog, and the answers surprised me. I just want to share those answers with you. When you start a blog, you start it for a reason, and here are the 6 MOST COMMON REASONS FOR STARTING A BLOG:

- You want to leave your job — the one that wants to earn money (lots of it) through a great blog and live life on your own terms.

- You want to vent your frustrations out, and/or write about things you can’t talk about in your normal day-to-day life. You use writing therapeutically, as a catharsis. Usually, if you blog from this mental model you blog anonymously.

- You want to record your life as it happens to you, and your blogs take on the role of a life journal for you.

- You think having a blog would be a good marketing tool for your business/product.

- You believe that you are an expert on something and you want to share your knowledge, experience, and insights with the world for one reason or another.

- You think that blogging is “cool” and since you are “cool”, you should blog.

NOW FOR THE PERSONAL PART: WHY DID I START BLOGGING?

Yes, I wanted to blog for the money and thought that it is a great way to start a business. I started a blog and then after 3 months, since I didn’t earn any money, except $8.90 from Google AdSense, I stopped blogging. Good decision! Then again after 3 years the “blogging-itch” came back and I started another blog, and this time I thought I am an expert on personal development, and it will be great that I share my invaluable insights with the world and also earn some good money from doing so. As you can imagine, and as it turned out, I realized I am not an expert on personal development and obviously only Google AdSense was the only organization in the world that decided to give me a few dollars now and then, I stopped blogging within 6 months. Good decision again. Then — yes the itch came back again and this time before I started blogging, I asked myself “The Question”. What is blogging all about and why do I want to blog?

The answers that came to me were as follows:

- I want to blog for the feeling of having a good and interesting conversation, through the posts I write, over a virtual cup of coffee with a “stranger-friend” from another part of the world, living a life and facing all the problems that come as a result of living a life.

- I want to blog to share some of my ways to handle the life problems we all face.

- I want to blog to learn how some of my reader friends handle their own life problems and share them with others.

- I want to blog to make great life-long friends, whom I will meet in the “real” world someday and have great conversations with them.

- I want to blog to help someone in any way I can, and to tell someone, who needs to be told and is sent my way, to hang in there a little longer and that things will fall into place somehow.

- I want to blog to see myself consciously acting as a creative helpful soul, making this world a better place to live in.

And as for the money, yes I want to earn money through my blog by creating value for my readers through products, that will in turn help them create value in their own lives. But this time, money is not the goal. Thank you Google AdSense, but I don’t need you anymore. I have understood that money is never the goal, but only a by-product of the value you create for others by whatever means you can.

I also understood that there are no “experts”, especially so in the personal development arena. There are only levels. Some of us are ahead of ourselves and some of us behind, but we are all on the same journey. “Expert” is a misleading word. It simply means that the person whom we consider an “expert” knows a little bit more than us and that’s about it.

In one word, it is all about SHARING. In more than one word, it’s all about the human connection and exchange of thoughts, ideas, and inspirations. The sooner you understand that the shorter the time will be for you to create an inspiring and successful blog.

I just want to share those answers with you. When you start a blog, you start it for a reason, and here are the 6 MOST COMMON REASONS FOR STARTING A BLOG:</p>

<p>- You want to leave your job — the one that wants to earn money (lots of it) through a great blog and live life on your own terms.</p>
<p>- You want to vent your frustrations out, and/or write about things you can’t talk about in your normal day-to-day life. You use writing therapeutically, as a catharsis. Usually, if you blog from this mental model you blog anonymously.</p>
<p>- You want to record your life as it happens to you, and your blogs take on the role of a life journal for you.</p>
<p>- You think having a blog would be a good marketing tool for your business/product.</p>
<p>- You believe that you are an expert on something and you want to share your knowledge, experience, and insights with the world for one reason or another.</p>
<p>- You think that blogging is “cool” and since you are “cool”, you should blog.</p>

<p>NOW FOR THE PERSONAL PART: WHY DID I START BLOGGING?</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>Yes, I wanted to blog for the money and thought that it is a great way to start a business. I started a blog and then after 3 months, since I didn’t earn any money, except $8.90 from Google AdSense, I stopped blogging. Good decision! Then again after 3 years the “blogging-itch” came back and I started another blog, and this time I thought I am an expert on personal development, and it will be great that I share my invaluable insights with the world and also earn some good money from doing so. As you can imagine, and as it turned out, I realized I am not an expert on personal development and obviously only Google AdSense was the only organization in the world that decided to give me a few dollars now and then, I stopped blogging within 6 months. Good decision again. Then — yes the itch came back again and this time before I started blogging, I asked myself “The Question”. What is blogging all about and why do I want to blog?</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>The answers that came to me were as follows:</p>
<p>- I want to blog for the feeling of having a good and interesting conversation, through the posts I write, over a virtual cup of coffee with a “stranger-friend” from another part of the world, living a life and facing all the problems that come as a result of living a life.</p>
<p>- I want to blog to share some of my ways to handle the life problems we all face.</p>
<p>- I want to blog to learn how some of my reader friends handle their own life problems and share them with others.</p>
<p>- I want to blog to make great life-long friends, whom I will meet in the “real” world someday and have great conversations with them.</p>
<p>- I want to blog to help someone in any way I can, and to tell someone, who needs to be told and is sent my way, to hang in there a little longer and that things will fall into place somehow.</p>
<p>- I want to blog to see myself consciously acting as a creative helpful soul, making this world a better place to live in.</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>And as for the money, yes I want to earn money through my blog by creating value for my readers through products, that will in turn help them create value in their own lives. But this time, money is not the goal. Thank you Google AdSense, but I don’t need you anymore. I have understood that money is never the goal, but only a by-product of the value you create for others by whatever means you can.</p>

<p>I also understood that there are no “experts”, especially so in the personal development arena. There are only levels. Some of us are ahead of ourselves and some of us behind, but we are all on the same journey. “Expert” is a misleading word. It simply means that the person whom we consider an “expert” knows a little bit more than us and that’s about it.</p>

<p>WHAT IS BLOGGING ALL ABOUT?</p>

<p>In one word, it is all about SHARING. In more than one word, it’s all about the human connection and exchange of thoughts, ideas, and inspirations. The sooner you understand that the shorter the time will be for you to create an inspiring and successful blog.</p>

What you need to think before starting a successful blog

What do you do when you feel down? I used to just sit and do nothing and keep thinking about the thing that made me feel that way. Later in life, I realized that such behavior is actually one of the most useless ways to react emotionally to something that bothers you.

Firstly, because it doesn’t help you at all. Secondly, it focuses your conscious attention on what you don’t like in the first place. So what to do in such situations? All the situations you face in your life can basically be divided into two broad categories. Situations you can do something about and situations you can’t do anything about.

What I am talking about here are the things over which you have no apparent control. If you feel down because of something that you can actually control at some level, then just stop reading and go do what you can do. No point sitting here feeling miserable when you have the reins in your own hands.

If you think that you can’t do anything to change what makes you feel miserable then here are three strategies to use in such situations:

This strategy was popularized by NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming). Basically, it states that your body and your mental states are interrelated. If you are thinking depressing thoughts your body will follow i.e., go into a depression reflecting mode, and similarly when you are feeling excited your body will reflect that happy and excited state of mind.

So no matter how low you are feeling at the moment, consciously change your posture and breathing. Think how would you be sitting or standing and breathing if you were happy and then adopt that posture.

Indulge yourself in little things like cleaning your closet or organizing your inbox etc. What you do is not important but your getting involved in doing that is what is vital. Get really involved in whatever you choose to do and do it well.

If you are watering your plants, do it with all your attention. If you are cleaning your dishes, really make them shine. The point is to involve yourself in what you are doing to the point that your conscious thoughts are forced to attend to the task at hand rather than mulling over the bothersome incident and pushing you into a downward emotional spiral.

Another important purpose this exercise will serve is that you will get to do a lot of things you always wanted to do but never got around to actually doing them. As you complete the tasks you will feel little sparks of motivation creeping inside you and the bundled negative energy leaving your consciousness.

We arrive in the world free of beliefs. Just watch an infant for a short time, and you will see the possibility of receiving the experiences of the world without the filter of beliefs. For infants, everything is seen with wonder and delight — no labels, no judgments, no categorizing into right or wrong, good or bad. As we grow up in our families, we have experiences that prompt us to develop our beliefs. We learn what is acceptable and unacceptable. We learn how to get approval and avoid disapproval. We feel fear when our needs are not completely met, and we develop some mental strategies that help us to cope. The purpose of beliefs is to organize the world that seems uncontrollable, challenging, and chaotic.

How do our beliefs about ourselves and the world around us shape our lives?

Our beliefs operate as a filter through which we perceive our experiences of the world. If we have expectations about how things should be, we evaluate everything that happens according to them, and we react when they are not met. If we hold negative views about ourselves, our potential is stunted and our relationships are compromised. If we judge others or see the world as unjust or frightening, we act accordingly in ways that bring unhappiness to ourselves and others. Seeing things through the lens of our beliefs is like peering through veils that distort our view of reality. And lifting the veils of our beliefs offers the possibility of clarity, fulfillment, creative expression, and heart-opening. We get out of our own way so we can truly live.

This may sound revolutionary, but I’m not interested in changing negative beliefs into positive ones. My interest is in true freedom, in seeing reality directly, as it is, with no filters and no beliefs. Positive beliefs aren’t necessary because our essence, free of all beliefs, is already clear, open, luminous, creative, and full. Any belief can be seen through by investigating it. Start with a belief. Ask if it is true. See if it is serving you. Discover what emotion might be fueling the belief — usually, you will find fear. Feel the fear and let it be, without creating a story around it. Experiment with the possibility of living a life free of beliefs. Listen to the natural wisdom that resides within you, and you will see that beliefs are unnecessary to live a happy, loving, and fulfilling life.

True happiness is unconditional. It doesn’t depend on any belief. It is our true nature, the essence of who we are when all beliefs fall away. Rather than installing new beliefs, investigate the ones that are already there. You will see that they are not completely true and ultimately don’t serve you.

Discover the possibility of letting go of the need to control life through your beliefs and let your life speak through you. This is the pathway to your natural, shining self.

For me, it has become who I am to investigate all beliefs. I don’t want any thought, no matter how subtle, to hold me back from the fullness of life. When any emotional reaction appears, whenever I feel stuck, I trace back to the underlying belief. I find, over and over again, that my beliefs don’t hold up under scrutiny. None of them are true!

When I see them as thoughts that appear and disappear, just like a cloud passing through the vast sky, I return to happiness every time. My life has changed immeasurably by my willingness to let go of my attachment to all thoughts. I don’t spend my time trying to figure things out. My mind is at peace. I am calm and non-reactive. I accept things as they are. 

As the walls of beliefs tumble down, I no longer feel separate from life. Love and happiness bubble out everywhere. And this change is possible for everyone if you are willing to put all your beliefs up for grabs. I have changed many, many limiting beliefs but the one I must write about is changing “I can’t” to “I can.” For years, I said “I can’t because….” I’ve trained my mind to stop this thought to come up, and replace it with, “I know I can and I know I will.”

Every time you feel like "I can’t", or "I don’t know how" — stop, and remind yourself of my previous successes. You remind yourself that you CAN, and you will find a way. From there — life begins to unfold. Rather than be unhappy with what life gives us, we can learn to be empowered and make things happen. Life is far more fun when we truly believe that we are empowered, active participants, and not just observers.

How to change our negative beliefs into positive ones

Why not prepare your user-stories in advance?

When determining a complete user-story format such as the A4 story, each user-story requires a lot of work. Multiplied by about fifty user-stories, the work becomes significant and its cost is not insignificant.

When all this work is done for about fifty user-stories, this work often leads to very bad behaviors or significant risks to get out of this agile mindset.

Unfortunately, when this work is done upstream instead of just in time, the scope loses all its variability. How to change features when all user-stories are already written?

Certainly this is not impossible but imagine the important risk of forgetting to modify impacted user-stories when we want to modify the behavior of a complete scenario on the product to be realized?

Even if you go back to the 50 user-stories as you go along, aren't there some things you might miss? Who can keep an intense attention on the successive reading of his 50 user-stories?

Honestly, the risk of degrading the functional quality of the product is very high with this type of practice; I'm not even talking about the time wasted after development to catch up on errors that accumulate in user-stories that are not up to date.

Worse still, the case where we will avoid changing the scope to limit this type of error as much as possible... But here we are in a context where agility no longer exists at all.

Just-in-time is also a constant challenge

Indeed, the fact of writing your user-stories as you go along (from an already defined vision) allows you to write them at the right time. Realized elements, feedback and experience allow to be more accurate in the writing of the user-story which will go into development from the next sprint.

Can we really guess everything beforehand with the sequence of writing user-stories? I really think it is utopian to think it even if the Product Owner has an excellent vision of his product.

When estimates bring its share of unpleasant surprises

I have encountered a case that I share with you because it is interesting. We made a complete story mapping of the imagined product. Although all the user-stories were already written, we quickly realize that the scope of what was expected was relatively important.

By achieving an Extreme Quotation with the implementation team that has been working together for a year, we quickly realized that only half of the scope could be developed in relation to the allocated budget envelope; and this in the most optimistic case.

We can quickly understand that with user feedback that can lead the product to change and problems of any kind, only at best 30% of the scope already 100% written will be deliverable.

Not to mention the possibility of finding additional budget (often complex in large structures), 70% of user-stories have been written for nothing... A very important loss that will be added to the modifications that will have to be continually made during the realization of the product.
